Hardshot: Even Tombstones Die

Stones: Even Tombstones Die

Some are white but most are grey
From time or lack of care.
Appearance means so little
Since no one visits there.

Some were grand but none withstand
Quiet time that tiptoes by
And leaves behind this epitaph:

Even tombstones die.
* * * *
Louisville's Eastern Cemetery, born as an act of philanthropy in 1848, was closed by the attorney general 140 years later after decades of overburial and neglect. Now its only enduring monument is the love and affection of those who try to maintain it.

Hardshot: A Poor Old Wise Man

A poor old wise man saved his town
But his name's not written down
Since history books will never name us
Unless we are already famous.

Highshot: Fame

Fame

Fame
Fame is like the favoured gull that soars above the sand
Master of the wind and sky, condemned to never land.

Luckyshot: Lady Luck

Lady Luck

The Face of Luck

Lady Luck has rosy cheeks that glow like Hell's own embers.

Yet the happy face of Luck is one no one remembers.

For if Luck had a pretty face that we remembered well.

When we looked upon it, we'd turn and run like Hell.

Hipshot: Believing Your Eyes

A Sand Mandala for World Peace
designed and created by Tibetan Monk Yeshi Palden who made the mandala at Louisville, 2008

The wheel of truth has many spokes
Some red, some blue, some green.
As the wheel begins to roll
Each spoke is clearly seen.

But as the wheel rolls faster yet
The spokes pass out if sight
And the many colored wheel of truth
Appears as solid white.

Entitled "Prayer for World Peace"; designed and created by Tibetan monk Yeshi Palden who traveled from New York to Louisville to make the sand painting at Zen Garden. Completed April 13, 2008.

Jumpshot: The Story of the Spider and the Bee

The Story of the Spider and the Bee
The Spider and the Bee share the nectar of the same rose. With the rose's nectar the Bee makes honey, the Spider makes venom.

Freeshot: Pretty Books

Pretty Books
The pretty books please my eyes
when they are all arranged by size.
But pretty is beheld in vain
when you're looking for a book by name.

Foulshot: Perfect Blue

Perfect Blue
A short rose bloomed in perfect blue
but no one saw its perfect hue.
The blue rose cried: can beauty be
if no one is here to see?
But no one heard the blue rose call
Are not blue roses like us all?

Regret
REGRET

To marry or to marry not?
I haven't chosen yet.
But I know the way I go
Will lead me to regret.

A Potshot

O On the eve of the implosion of the Riverview Square Office Building (July 18, 2008) in preparation for building the new Louisville arena (the site is visible on the right at the terminus of the Clark Memorial Bridge) no one foresaw that the financing would also implode within days.

Fixin' to get ready to get started

Many worlds share the same horizon

Some people plan to make plans. I've planned to begin a blog and have decided the best way to get started is to get started. I'll plan while I blog and blog while I plan. The title of the blog says it all: photographs, epigrams and observations. Snapshots, potshots and hotshots. You are welcome to add your own.
